Surveys the present state of children's books in the Caribbean, particularly in Jamaica. Jamaica has been at the forefront of children's literature, but publishers often face challenges in their production of children's books. This is due, in part to the expense of full color pages in the case of picture books and to questions concerning the size of the market for Caribbean children's literature. Jamaican children's books often mix fantasy with everyday life, and many stories are set in familiar locations such as the market or the home. Many stories teach the importance of having values such as self-esteem, sharing or the importance of friendship and family.
