The point is that you are apparently part of a little shame and scandal in the family.' "Rufus's life has much to offer. In spite of his haphazard family background (aunties who act as mothers, fathers who don't seem too interested) Rufus has done well at school. The chance of a foreign university, and a way out of his narrow universe, are his for the taking. First, though, he has to get a passport. In fact, his passionate desire to know which of his many uncles and aunties, which of the many family friends, are his real biological parents, comes to dominate his daily life.
