Letter of the committee of the Baptist Missionary Society : To the Churches of Christ in Jamaica - 1 volume : black and white ; 15 x 12 cm - paper typed

The Society, founded in 1792, opened a station in Jamaica in 1814. This rare Letter absolves Jamaica Baptists from charges that they have engaged in "gross superstitions" and "that, under the cloak of religious profession, you indulge unbridled tempers, and allow yourselves in vicious practices." The letter warns against use of "the leader and ticket system," and encourages the Churches to preach the gospel "to persons every where of African descent." It is signed at the end in type by W.B. Gurney, Joseph Angus, and twenty-five others, and dated November 4, 1842.
