This material represents sixteen letters written by George Hibbert, West Indian Merchant and Collector to various merchant colleagues regarding the duty and regulation of the rum and spirits trade, the alarm occasioned in the city by the proposed admission of Mauritius Sugar, the projected West India Company, and the difficulties experienced in Jamaica with the slaves. The letters were written during the period February 20, 1808 to April 14, 1828, also included is typewritten extracts of three pages about the letters.
